THERE'S MORE TO DO ON THE SNOW THAN SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING |
| There’s an old mountain saying, ‘you ski on your stomach, not your feet’, which rings true for most of us. It’s a maxim that’s been taken seriously at the Australian snow and we’re winning the on-snow dining experience hands down. Gourmet foodies can dine on-mountain in spectacular surroundings with award-winning restaurants set right on the ski runs, as well as at ski-in/ski-out resort villages. Thredbo alone has more than seven on-mountain restaurants you can ski to when hunger begins to beckon, and that doesn’t even include the dining options in the village. Other resorts in NSW and Victoria also come to the foodie party with excellent restaurants that offer far more than carb-loading to fuel the next morning’s downhill run. In fact, the Australian mountains can be a destination simply for the incredible dining experiences. All the alpine towns and villages have great restaurants and excellent wine lists to match, which often include selections from neighbouring vineyards. What could be more perfect than sampling a few excellent reds in front of a log fire with a views across the glistening white snow? And that’s the beauty of winter feasting; a cold and wintry day provides the perfect backdrop to a long lunch or dinner with friends. Fancy a whole suckling pig cooked on the spit? You’ll find it tastes twice as good at the snow! What about a traditional roasted turkey? It may not actually be Christmas, but it feels like it should be and the numerous Christmas In July festivals provide a great excuse to pack your bags and celebrate everyone’s favourite holiday twice in one year. There are also plenty of food festivals to whet your appetite, including the Dinner Plain Food & Wine Festival and the Mountain Fresh Festival at Mt Hotham. Or during the opening week at Mount Buller, you can enjoy a three-course meal at the Olympic Winter Institute Dinner while you hear about the outstanding performances of our young ski and snowboard athletes. Take a look at what’s around and you’ll discover some hotels and lodges offer guests a gourmet dining experience of their own. With so much good food to entice you from the fields, you may need to play even harder to work off some of that indulgence. Just make sure you book ahead, especially on weekends. |
