PREPARING

FOR FUN

You don’t need to be a superior athlete to enjoy your time on the mountain. There are a few minor exercises that you can do at home to prepare your body for a holiday at the snow. Although skiing and snowboarding are obviously quite physical sports ¬– particularly as you’re learning – you don’t need to be in top physical form to enjoy them.

First-time skiers and snowboarders often slump their weary bodies by the fire at the end of their first day feeling as though they’ve run a marathon, but a few stretches and squats is all it takes to make your body snow-ready. Squats help to strengthen your knees, calves and thighs, while stretching, particularly your back, will help you to become more flexible, which your body will thank you for when you’re manoeuvring through the snow! You don’t need to go to the gym, but some fitness centres have special pre-snow workout programs, so ask your local gym instructor to give you a few examples. Of course, enjoying a hot spa, a drink by the fireplace and a delicious meal needs no preparation at all.
