If altitude is what you’re after, Charlotte Pass will take you all the way to the top! It’s the highest resort in Australia and lies in the heart of the NSW Snowy Mountains. It’s a mere 8km from the Perisher Valley and a six-and-a-half hour drive from Sydney or seven hours from Melbourne. Here you’ll be amazed at the majestic views of Mt Kosciuszko and The Snowy Mountain Range – it’s an incredible snow experience.
Charlotte Pass is a little more difficult to access and is much smaller than other resorts, but what this resort lacks in convenience, it makes up for in some of the most consistent and best-quality snowfalls in Australia. It also provides a unique car-free environment, giving it a lovely village atmosphere. It’s great for kids and beginners, but also has enough to keep experienced skiers entertained. For first-timers, a lesson with the snow school is a must before taking to the gentle slopes of Easy Does It and the Home Run. There are also snowshoe tours and cross-country skiing options.
For accommodation, there is a choice of the historic, Bavarian-style Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel, as well as fully catered or self-catered ski lodge accommodation. Charlotte Pass is a smaller resort, so make sure you book ahead. Or you could stay at Perisher or Jindabyne and head to the resort for day trips.
Snow tip:
Charlotte Pass can only be accessed by special over-snow transport, which runs regularly from Perisher, so you will need to leave your car at the base of the Skitube Alpine Railway near Jindabyne and take the train through the mountain.
